One of the most balanced Crianza wines we tasted for this book. This classic Rioja is deep ruby red, with the slightest hint of mahogany in the rim; the nose fills with wonderful blackberry and subtle oak aromas, and on the palate lively cassis, vanilla and coffee flavors lead to a finish that is long, fresh and clean. Named for one of the Navarra Kings who fought in the First Crusade in the 11th century, Ramirez de la Piscina today is a winery that makes a line of excellent Rioja wines combining the best of the traditional and the modern.

Decant for at least 30 minutes and serve at 16 - 18℃; excellent with all fowl and red meats, especially lamb, and a fine match for Cantonese style roasted pigeon.

Aged 12 months in mixture of American and French oak.

Lovely now and can be enjoyed over the next decade.
