Of the top three Right Bank wines (Ch. Petrus, Ch. Ausone & Ch. Cheval Blanc), Cheval Blanc is by far the best value. The 1998 Cheval Blanc is one of the best wines of the vintage and while this approximately $9,500 wine is already delicious the wine will be even better after 5~10 years. Be patient.

The 1998 wine is a very dark red color with heady scents of cassis and truffles. This wine is quite young and the wine needs time in the glass to open up. This very concentrated wine is almost overpowering in the mouth with classic Cheval Blanc flavors of black fruits, chocolate and coffee. The tannins are still a little aggressive but they will soften as the wine ages. The finish of the wine is a little sharp, again a sign of the wine's youth, but still extremely pleasing in it's complexity and persistence on the palate. Enjoy this wine with Venison Steak with Wild Forest Mushrooms, Roasted Duck with Prunes and Prime Dry-Aged New York Strip Steak. If you wish to drink this wine now, decant the wine and allow at least two hours for the wine to breathe. Serve this wine at 18 ℃.

Cheval-Blanc's unique identity is a result of varied soils, an early-ripening microclimate, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc and the close proximity of the vineyard to the finest wines of Pomerol. The wine is somewhat of a St. Emilion and Pomerol hybrid with an elegant and powerful style all it's own. The wine is approachable early but becomes increasingly complex and subtle with aging.
