It's good to be different, as this $800 bottle of Portuguese wine proves. This winemaker, partially owned by Lafite Rothschild, produces a very fine red wine.

This robust wine is very Portuguese in style. The wine has a dark, brooding color and spicy bouquet. The wine is almost Port like in taste but drier and lighter. The slightly sweet plum fruit and dark berry flavors are nicely balanced with well-structured tannins. The wine has been aged two years in oak and this helps soften the wine. This wine is a fine match with game dishes, including Roasted Pheasant with Chestnuts, Pigeon Stew with Baby French Peas and Iberian Wild Boar. Game dishes available in Taiwan including Mountain Goat, Deer and Mountain Boar will also match well with this wine.

Situated 200 kilometers east of Lisbon, only 40 kilometers from the Spanish boarder, this estate has a long and respected history. Formerly a favorite vineyard of the Portuguese royal family, in 1992, Domaines Barons de Rothschild invested in this estate. Along with new investment, new technology and French varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon have been introduced. These new wines have won praise in Europe and the U.S.
