Better known for his much more expensive Bonnes Mares wines, Groffier also makes one of Burgundy's best Passetoutgrains wines. This year, I've tasted three Vintage 2000 Passetoutgrains (Faiveley, Jayer-Gilles and Groffier) and the Groffier is clearly the best. While the other two are pleasant and refreshing wines, only the Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains exhibits good structure with hints of Burgundian elegance. This is a light to medium bodied wine with lovely bright ruby red color. The bouquet is nicely fruity and spicy. In the mouth, you can really taste the Pinot Noir fruit with a bit of youthful exuberance from the Gamay grape - quite interesting! Enjoy this wine with light summer meat and pasta dishes or even elegant fish dishes. Remember to serve this wine slightly chilled, about 16℃ then let it develop in the glass.
