1997 was a great Napa Valley vintage and grapes for this wine were sourced from several premium Napa vineyards; the wine has a dark purple-red color and pungent aromas of cassis and spice and concentrated, richly textured flavors of black cherry, blackberries and subtle oak; the tannins need at least one hour of breathing to soften; match with Prime steaks and elegant stews; once the most important quality producer in the U.S., the Robert Mondavi Winery is now a public company with no involvement by Robert Mondavi and is increasingly emphasizing inexpensive, mass-produced wines.
