The 2001 is a full-bodied and heady old-style Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine with a deep purple-ruby red color, a racy nose of mature black fruit, exotic spices and licorice and concentrated flavors of dark berries, leather, black pepper and spices; this is a big, earthy wine with round and subtle tannins; after an hour plus of breathing the finish becomes very lingering and complex; match with game birds and hearty Southern French stews; the term Pegau refers to a wine jug found in the excavations of the 14th century Popes Palace in Avignon and today also indicates one of the very best Chateauneuf-du-Pape producers.
